First-trimester prenatal scan
The screening ultrasound scan between 11 and 14 (13+6) weeks of pregnancy is performed to identify pregnant women at increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities. It also allows us to date the pregnancy accurately, detect many major fetal anomalies, diagnose a twin pregnancy and determine its chorionicity and, more recently, to carry out early screening for pre-eclampsia. We perform the scan in line with the recommendations and certification of the Fetal Medicine Foundation in London.

2Second trimester18–22 weeks of pregnancy
Second-trimester prenatal scan
This ultrasound scan is performed between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy. During the scan the detailed anatomy of the fetus is assessed, because the baby is much larger than in the first trimester and the internal organs are more clearly visible. The length of the cervical canal is also measured to help prevent preterm birth. Sometimes the cervix shortens despite the absence of contractions. This is then referred to as cervical insufficiency.

3Third trimester28–32 weeks of pregnancy
Third-trimester prenatal scan
This ultrasound scan is performed between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. Its main purpose is to assess whether the fetus is growing normally and to reassess the baby’s anatomy, because some abnormalities evolve as pregnancy progresses and may not be visible on earlier ultrasound scans.
