Hysteroscopy

Did you know that most hysteroscopic procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, without the need for a hospital stay? In our practice we perform minimally invasive hysteroscopic procedures under local anaesthesia, without the need for general anaesthesia.

Key points at a glance

  • under local anaesthesia
  • no general anaesthesia
  • no hospital stay
  • no need to fast
  • during a gynaecological appointment
  • “see and treat” approach

What is hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is an endoscopic examination that allows visual assessment of the genital tract.

The hysteroscope optic is introduced through the vagina, then through the cervical canal, into the uterine cavity. This allows visual assessment of the reproductive organ and, if abnormalities are found, simultaneous treatment according to the “see and treat” principle.

How do we do it?

We perform office (in-clinic) hysteroscopy without the need for hospital admission or general anaesthesia. This is possible thanks to miniaturised equipment, with optics just a few millimetres in diameter and micro-instruments.

We use a paracervical block and the “no touch” technique: the hysteroscope is introduced through the vagina into the cervical canal and then into the uterine cavity, without clamping instruments onto the cervix, in order to minimise the discomfort felt by the patient.

The advantage of outpatient hysteroscopy is that the examination is performed during a gynaecological appointment, with a quick return to everyday life. There is no need to fast, to have general anaesthesia or to stay in hospital, which reduces the stress experienced by the patient.

What are the indications for hysteroscopy?

  • abnormal genital tract bleeding
  • infertility and recurrent miscarriage
  • abnormalities found on ultrasound, such as: polyps of the reproductive tract (cervical canal polyp, endometrial polyp), fibroids, endometrial hyperplasia
  • suspected congenital uterine anomaly
  • suspected intrauterine adhesions
  • need to remove a foreign body from the uterine cavity (e.g. an embedded intrauterine device)
  • repositioning of a displaced intrauterine device
  • follow-up after previous hysteroscopic procedures
  • planning of treatment by resectoscopy

What are the contraindications to hysteroscopy?

  • pregnancy
  • active genital infection (including herpes virus infection)
  • cervical cancer
  • heavy genital tract bleeding
  • severe systemic diseases

Which procedures do we perform hysteroscopically?

We follow the “see and treat” principle — even a diagnostic hysteroscopy can turn into an operative one during the same session.

In the practice — office hysteroscopy, under local anaesthesia

  • endometrial polyps
  • cervical canal polyps
  • intrauterine adhesions
  • correction of a congenital uterine anomaly (e.g. septate uterus)
  • removal of an embedded intrauterine device

In hospital — resectoscopy, under general anaesthesia

  • removal of fibroids
  • endometrial electroresection
  • correction of a caesarean section scar niche

These procedures require general anaesthesia and we perform them at Garden Clinic Hospital in Gdańsk (separate procedure price list).

Hysteroscopic procedures are performed by Mateusz Świątkowski, specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology. Doctors

When should hysteroscopy be performed?

  1. We perform diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy in the first phase of the menstrual cycle, ideally just after the end of the period.
  2. If cycles are irregular, preparation for the procedure with hormonal contraception is possible.
  3. We perform hysteroscopy after prior medical assessment and with a normal cervical cytology result.
  4. Slight bleeding or discomfort may occur after the examination.
